For the first time – here’s the full story of FANNY ADAMS, featuring VINCE MELOUNEY and DOUG PARKINSON. This is one of Aztec Records’ most highly anticipated projects, the first official reissue of Fanny Adams’ 1971 self-titled album, a master-class of moody, magnificent, riff-based Aussie Heavy Blues Rock.
During the 1960s guitarist-producer Vince Melouney had been a member of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Ray Brown and the Whispers and The Vince Maloney Sect in Australia and – most significantly when he moved to London – the Bee Gees. When he left the brothers Gibb, he signed a solo deal with MCA Records. Instead of making it a Vince Melouney record, he decided to make it a band project which resulted in the formation of Fanny Adams. He invited the celebrated musicians Doug Parkinson (vocals, Doug Parkinson In Focus), Teddy Toi (bass, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs), Johnny Dick (drums, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, In Focus) to join him in London. In early October 1970 Fanny Adams hit Morgan Studios for six weeks of song writing and recording sessions.
Vince says, “I wanted to play heavy guitar. Bands like Led Zeppelin were my bag anyway, I really loved all that stuff. Coming from the Bee Gees we did have rock and roll but it wasn’t heavy. I’d plug into a Marshall amp and turn it up. The Fanny Adams sound just evolved. Doug turned out to be an incredible writer which would have, had we gone on, developed even more. He wrote the lyrics and melodies. I had the riffs and chords but we all pitched in.”
They returned to Australia (December 1970) in order to get the band match fit. They had the talent to be able to tour the world, however events took a dark turn and Fanny Adams disbanded in February 1971. Fanny Adams was one of the great ‘what ifs’ of Australian rock, yet despite the sad ending the self-titled Fanny Adams remains a classic of heavy duty blues rock. It features many knock-out tracks such as ‘Ain’t No Loving Left’, ‘Got to Get a Message to You’, ‘Yesterday was Today’ and ‘Mid Morning Madness’. ”
